I am not sure why, but one of the most overlooked destinations in Mexico is the city of Morelia in the state of Michoacán.
I don’t believe I have been to a more picturesque Centro Historico in my travels.
There is a reason the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking the cobblestone streets, discovering the centuries old buildings, plazas, churches and the mile long aqueduct, is a trip back in time. Exploring the Centro area brings surprises around every corner.
When I visited in the Spring of 2021, my fondest memory was sitting in one of the plazas during sunset watching the locals enjoying their city.
Morelia for many tourists is a stopover for tours to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries in the mountains a few hours away.
It is also a base to visit nearby Pátzcuero, a Pueblo Mágicos which is considered by many Mexico’s number one destination for Dia de Muertos.
Plus the other pueblos that surround the lake that also goes by the name Pátzcuero, shouldn’t be missed. Mainly inhabited by the indigenous Purépecha, each pueblo centuries ago, were designated a craft, like pottery, weaving, coppersmithing…etc. Everyone should learn about the fascinating history of the region before arriving.
It is sad to think that many fail to explore beautiful Morelia itself before venturing to these nearby destinations. They would be missing out on one of the best architectural and cultural experiences in Mexico
