I’m gradually getting used to the time change—but this humidity? Not so much. Living in San Diego/Tijuana has definitely spoiled me when it comes to weather.
I had a late start this morning, heading out around 11:00 am (8:00 pm back home). I took advantage of Singapore’s fantastic public transportation system with the MRT station just a few blocks away. Deep underground, this clean and modern subway is known as one of the best in the world. No need to buy a ticket—just a quick tap with my phone or credit card, and it charges the fare ($1.50–$2.50) at my destination. Trains run every five minutes or so, getting you everywhere fast.
Exiting Chinatown station was dramatic—rising up a long escalator, I landed in the middle of a pedestrian street packed with shops and restaurants, all set against rows of 1800s Chinese-style buildings.
Today’s mission? Try Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, one of the most famous food stalls in the world. This humble spot in Maxwell Food Centre earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and was a favorite of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay. After a quick 10-minute wait, I got my plate of poached chicken and fragrant rice drizzled in dark soy sauce—all for about $5. The chicken was tender and practically melted in my mouth. Delicious? Let’s just say I could eat this every day.
After lunch, I hopped back on the MRT and headed to Gardens by the Bay. This massive waterfront park features 18 tree-like structures, ranging from 80 to 160 feet tall. At night, they light up in a coordinated music show—something I hope to catch when I return to Singapore on my way back. While the park has tons to explore, the humidity eventually got to me, and I headed back to the hotel for a much-needed siesta.
In the evening, I set out to explore Little India again, which was buzzing with people celebrating Diwali. Unlike other “Little [country]” neighborhoods I’ve seen, this one feels like a true slice of India itself.
I wasn’t feeling brave enough to dive into the street food scene in Little India just yet, so I found myself back at The Beer People for a clean and comfortable dinner. Tonight, it was Thai Shrimp Cakes and a local beer—a simple but satisfying end to the day.
With 28 days still ahead on this journey, I’m pacing myself. Tomorrow, I’m off to Ao Nang Beach in Krabi, Thailand—can’t wait!
